About your MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most powerful non-invasive techniques in diagnostic medicine. Instead of using radiation, MRI uses a magnetic field, radio waves and computer technology, to generate detailed three-dimensional images of body tissue and anatomy.

MRI is able to reveal injury or damage to soft tissue and bony structures. Through its sophisticated ability to differentiate between healthy and pathologic tissue, MRI is a reliable way to diagnose cancer, brain, neurological, spine, disc and nerve abnormalities as well as joint and muscle problems which may not be detectable by other diagnostic methods. Furthermore, MRI is safer than X Ray or CT scans because it does not expose the patient to ionizing radiation.

Scanning Procedures

The MRI scan is painless and non-invasive. You will be required to change into a gown which is provided or, should you wish, you may wear your own clothing provided it does not contain any metal. The scan typically takes approximately 30 minutes. During the scan you will be comfortably positioned in the scanner, hear a rhythmic sound and you will be asked to hold still so that the images are clear.

We offer the ability to listen to the music of your choice during the scan, so please feel free to bring in your favourite CD or MP3 player which you may listen to during your scan.

If your physician requires it, a contrast agent may be introduced intravenously to define or to highlight a particular area.

Scheduling an Exam

To schedule an examination we require an Patient requisition form signed and completed by your physician. This form is available online (please click here) and may be sent to CMI by fax at 604.733.4424 or by email at info [at] canmagnetic.com.

Upon receipt of the Patient requisition form a representative from CMI will contact you to schedule your appointment.

If you need to reschedule your exam, please make sure to call our office as soon as possible so we may schedule you for a later date. If you do not call to cancel 24 hours prior to your exam a cancellation fee may apply.

Preparing for your Exam

There is no special preparation required and you may eat and drink normally prior to the scan.

Contraindications

MRI is a safe and painless diagnostic procedure that can be performed on almost any patient. There are a few conditions, however, which would prohibit a patient from having an MRI scan. They include:

  • Pacemaker
  • Neuro-stimulator (tens-unit)
  • Ferrous intracranial aneurysm clips
  • Implanted drug infusion device

Our MRI personnel will question you thoroughly prior to your examination to ensure that you can be imaged safely. For a full list of potential contraindications please click here.
